The Absurd Struggle

‘The Absurd Struggle’ explores addiction and the conflict between the human desire to find meaning in life and the often chaotic nature of the universe. It reflects the repetitive efforts people make to achieve personal goals, despite the possibility that these pursuits may not have a grand purpose. The work celebrates the resilience and determination of individuals who continue to strive and create meaning in their lives.

In this piece, I depict myself in two contrasting roles. The larger figure, shirtless and on hands and knees, represents the raw, primal side of my nature. On my back rides a smaller version of myself, trying to steer or simply hang on! This composition illustrates the tension of trying to impose order on something inherently chaotic, echoing themes of absurdist philosophy.

In the artwork’s exploration of struggles with addiction - portraying it as part of the broader existential struggle - the smaller character symbolises an attempt to escape the absurdity of existence and find temporary relief or meaning. Through these experiences, the work highlights the capacity to confront and overcome challenging obstacles.

At its core, ‘The Absurd Struggle’ emphasises the acceptance of life's unpredictability and the quest for meaning. It highlights the raw aspects of human existence and the effort to find purpose in a seemingly indifferent world. The work encourages viewers to embrace the absurdity and find strength in their persistence and creativity.
